What is the dimensions of a large pond from which Wudhu is valid even though it may contain some impurity?
Answer
The Fuqahaa (Islamic Jurists) have mentioned that a large pond is that which is 10×10 Dhiraa, (15ftx15ft) which is translated to 225ft2or 20.9m2 . This will be in the scenario when the pond is in a square shape. If the pond is in a circular shape then according to some, the circumference should equal to 36 Dhiraa, which is translated to 54ft or 16.4592m. Others have mentioned that the circumference should equal to 48 Dhiraa, which is translated to 72ft or 21.9456m (this is the more precautionary view, as mentioned in Fataawa Hindiyyah).
Therefore, anything equal to or larger than the above-mentioned dimensions will be considered a large pond. The ruling regarding such a pond is that if such impurity falls into the water that cannot be seen, for example, urine, blood etc. then it will be permissible to make Wudhu from any corner of the pond. If the impurity is such that it can be seen, for example, a dead corpse etc. then one may make Wudhu from any corner of the pond, however, it will be better for one not to make Wudhu from that area, rather one should make Wudhu from a different corner.
However, if so much impurity falls into the water (whether it can be seen or not), which causes either the taste, color, or smell of the pond to change, it will be regarded to be impure and it will be impermissible to make Wudhu from such a pond
