When To Make The Niyyah For A Nafl Fast

Question

Regarding niyyah for nafl fasts such as Shawwaal, if one does not make niyyah and upon awakening and decides to fast, will the fast be valid? 

Answer

The Niyyah for a Nafl fast should be made before Subah Saadiq (the time that Sehri ends) However, if a person forgets to make the Niyyah for his Nafl fast or decides after Subah Saadiq that he would like to keep a Nafl fast and he hasn’t consumed anything as yet, then he can make his Niyyat until Dhahwatul kubra .(Dhahwatul kubra refers to Shar’i midday, the middle point between Suba Saadiq and Sunset e.g. if Suba Saadiq is at 5:00am and sunset is at 6:00pm then Dhahwatul kubra would be at 11:30am)
