Multiple Jumuahs In The Same Masjid

Question

Due to employment or education, people may not be given permission and/or will not be able to perform Jum’ah Salah at the standard Jamat time in the Masjid.

Hence, in summer, a later Jum’ah takes place (late afternoon) in the same Masjid so that people do no not miss Jum’ah altogether?

(a) Is it permissible to organise a 2nd Jum’ah Jamat in the same Masjid where one Jum’ah Salah has already taken place?

(b) If not, please explain why?

(c) If this is not permissible, are there any alternative solutions or should one ensure that, come what may, they attend the Jum’ah Salah which takes place at the standard time?

Answer

Under normal circumstances, according to the Hanafi school of thought, it is makrooh to have a second congregational Salah in the masjid (once the fardh has already been discharged by the Imam). ‘Allamah Kasani Rahimahullah states in Bada’i‘ us-Sana’i‘:

If the residents of a locality or some of them have performed their Salah in the Masjid, it is makrooh for the non-residents and the remaining residents of the same locality to repeat the Adhan and Iqamah (i.e. to have a second jama‘at).

It is necessary for men to perform their Salah five times a day at the masjid, and the Jumu‘ah Salah holds an even greater status than the other Salahs. Therefore there should be no question of missing Jumu‘ah with the excuse of education or employment. To make it easier for everybody to fulfil the obligation of Jumu‘ah, another Jumu‘ah could be held at a later convenient time, but at a different Masjid/venue. It is permissible to have Jumu‘ah at different venues in one town, with diversity in their timings.
