Zakaat On Gift Vouchers

Question

Is Zakaat due on gift vouchers which are not redeemable for cash? One may only redeem them in store in exchange of some goods, clothing etc.

Answer

Because the gift vouchers are not regarded as cash or legal tender and the item/s redeemable by means of the vouchers are goods, clothing etc (and not cash, gold or silver), Zakaat will not be due on the value of the gift voucher nor on the items redeemed by the voucher.
