Question
I would like to know if it’s jaaiz for an unmarried girl to apply makeup even if it is in her house in front of mahrams only.
Answer
Hadrat Mufti Mahmood Saheb Gangohi has written that it is against intelligence and the perfect taste of a person to replace the natural beauty that has been bestowed to one by Allah Ta’aala with artificial beauty. He also writes that it is not correct to imitate the habits and customs of the Fussaq and Fujjar. The cosmetics and make-up that are available on the market are products that have been invented by the Kuffar and used mostly by their women. We therefore advise that an unmarried girl like you has no need whatsoever to use such cosmetic and should therefore abstain.
Yes, a woman that is married and permitted by her husband to utilise such cosmetic may use these cosmetics for her husband in the house, provided that she is sure that it does not contain any haraam ingredients.
