Blood Doping

Question

Is blood doping permissible?

Answer

Blood transfusion is permitted in Shariah when a patient is desperately in need of blood, or there is a fear of losing his/her life if blood is transfusion doesn’t take place. Blood doping is a practice amongst athletes where they artificially boost the blood’s ability in order to bring more oxygen to
muscles thereby improving athletic performance. In this case there isn’t a valid Shar’ee reason for blood transfusion, thus blood doping cannot be rendered permissible, in fact, it is illegal and banned even by the international Olympic committee and other sporting organizations.
