Is it permissible to consume rabbit meat?

Answer

It is permissible to consume rabbits, whether domestic or wild, because they are  herbivores which means they have a plant-based diet and do not eat meat and prey other animals.

ولا بأس بأكل الأرنب لما روي عن ابن عباس – رضي الله عنهما – أنه قال: «كنا عند رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم – فأهدى له أعرابي أرنبة مشوية فقال: لأصحابه كلوا» ، وعن محمد بن صفوان أو صفوان بن محمد أنه قال: «أصبت أرنبتين فذبحتهما بمروة وسألت عن ذلك رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم – فأمرني بأكلهما»
