Emojis

Question

Are the use of Emojis permissible?

Answer

Graphical emojis with facial expressions represent a human face in an animated form, thus one should refrain from its usage.

In reply to a question as to whether it is permissible to publish a picture of human teeth or eyes only, Hazrat Mufti Mahmood Saheb Gangohi (rahimahullah) issued the Fatwa that it would be permissible, provided that it is not together with the face. This Fatwa indicates that the eyes and teeth, etc. should not bepublished in such a way that they are incorporated into the face. Emojis generally display the eyes, teeth, etc. together with the face. Furthermore, these emojis are then circulated through social media which results in the additional transgression of circulating a picture of an animate object to others. Hence one should refrain using these emojis.
