Fidyah For A Deceased Who Could Not Remember Anything

Question

My father’s sister passed away. For the last four years, her mental state was such that she could not differentiate between days or times. She also could not remember anything. Will it be necessary to pay anything for her salaat for this period?

Answer

If a woman is in such a mental state that she cannot differentiate between days or times and cannot remember anything, then according to Shari’ah, she will not be bound by laws of worship. In such a state Salaah will not be necessary upon her; hence no fidyah for it has to be paid.
