Question
I normally calculate my Zakaat on the 1st Ramadhaan which co-incides with around the 24th April this year. If I receive my Salary the following day on the 25th April and then pay my monthly expenses, such as Rent, Domestic Workers wages, Telephone Account, School Fees etc., will I include my salary and subtract my monthly expenses when calculating my total Assets on which Zakaat is due.
Answer
On the first of Ramadhaan, you will calculate your total assets and subtract your liabilities from there. If you receive your salary on the second of Ramadhan it will not be added to your assets when calculating your Zakaat. Your monthly expenses will be deducted as they fall under liabilities. Zakaat will be given on the surplus.
