Garments Below The Ankles

Question

What is the ruling regarding garments hanging below the ankles?

Answer

The Shari’ah has prohibited man from allowing his garments to fall below his ankles. This
prohibition can clearly be seen from the following Ahadith:

“Hadhrat Abu Huraira Radiallahu Anhu relates that a person was praying with his trousers overhanging his ankles Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said to him go and make Wudhu so he went and made Wudhu and then returned. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam told him to go and make Wudhu so he went and made Wudhu and then returned. A person enquired, O Rasul of Allah, why did you instruct him to make Wudhu and then remained silent? Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam replied that he was praying in a condition that his trousers were overhanging his ankles and Allah (Whose praise is exalted) does not accept the Salaah of such a person.” (Abu Dawood)

Abu Dharr Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “There are three types of People whom  AllahTa’aala will not speak to on the Day of Qiyaamah nor will he look at them (with a gaze of mercy) and for them will be a dreadful punishment. Abu Dharr Radiallahu Anhu said: “The messenger of AllahTa’aala repeated the same thrice after which I remarked: “Doomed be those people! Who are they, Oh! Prophet of Allah?” He replied: “He whose trousers hang below his ankles; He who repeatedly mentions the favours he has done unto others; and He who sells his goods by taking false oaths.”

Hadhrat Abu Huraira Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “Whatever hangs below the  ankles from the trousers is in the fire (of Jahannam).”

The stern warnings that are found in the Ahadith clearly shows the Shar’iah’s stance on a man who lets his trousers hang below his ankles. After understanding how detestable such an action is in the light of the Shariah only a proud person who is ignorant would allow his upper garments or trousers to hang below his ankles. AllahProtect us and the entire Ummah Aameen.
