Question
Is it correct to say Jazakallah or Jazakallah-Khairan when thanking a person?
Answer
Sayyiduna Usamah bin ZaydRadiallahu Anhu reports, that Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said:
Whoever says ‘Jazakallahu Khairan’ to the one who has done good to him, has certainly extolled him in praise.
This narration has been declared authentic by Imam Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban Rahimahullah. We were unable to locate a narration that has ‘Jazakallah’ only. However, because it is the first part of the sentence narrated in the above-mentioned Hadeeth, there would be leeway in saying only ‘Jazakallah’ as well. The ideal thing would certainly be to say the complete ‘Jazakallahu Khairan’ as reported in the Hadeeth.
