Question
Is the use of lipstick permissible?
Answer
Many lipsticks and makeup products contain such ingredients which are Haraam thus making it impermissible to use them. However if after investigation, it is found that the lipstick does not contain any Haraam ingredients then it shall be permissible to use but under the following conditions:
1. The lipstick should not be worn out of the home as this would be regarded as beautifying oneself for other men and thus the lady would be sinful.
2. Water should be able to penetrate the lipstick. If water cannot penetrate the lipstick then the woman MUST ensure that the lipstick is completely removed before performing Wudhu or Ghusl. If it is not completely removed the Wudhu and Ghusl shall be null and void.
Although there is permissibility in this, we would still advise the womenfolk to abstain from the use of such makeup and lipsticks because these are in fact the products and ways of the disbelievers and we have been commanded to oppose the ways of the disbelievers.
