Question
Normal mendhi is made with the leaves of a plant. A certain type of mendhi is now being made from smoking tea leaves with sugar. The liquid collected therefrom is collected and flour added to it to make a paste. This paste is then used as nail henna.
Is this permissible to use?
Answer
It is mentioned in a narration of Sahih Bukhari:
It is narrated from Abdullah (ibn Mas’ud Radiallu Anhu), “Allah (Ta’aala) has cursed those women who practise tattooing and those who get themselves tattooed, and those who remove their face hairs, and those who create a space between their teeth artificially to look beautiful, and such women who change the features created by Allah Ta’aala. Why should I not curse those whom Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has cursed? And it is in the Book of Allah (Ta’aala): And whatever the Rasul (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) gives you, take it.”
Due to this, anything which changes the physical features or appearance from the way in which Allah Ta’aala has created the human should be avoided; unless, permission is given by the Shari’ah. Those substances shown to have been used or permitted in the Ahaadith, such as henna (mehndi made from the henna plant), saffron, etc., will be excluded from this Hadeeth. Thus, the usage of any substances not mentioned in the Ahaadith is strongly discouraged.
It should also be noted that if any substance applied to the body creates an impermeable film over the skin or nails, preventing water from reaching underneath, it will prevent a person’s Wudhu or Ghusl made thereafter from being valid.
