Question
I am currently taking part in a sports activity which is part funded by the National Lottery, which is deemed haram by the ulema, in which I wanted to ask if my participation is halal or not?
A Street Cricket initiative which is a 6 a-side indoor caged/netted cricket tournament/league which takes place in ______.
This initiative is part funded by many Cricket Boards such as the ______ Cricket Board and others including _____ bank and the National Lottery.
The activity is free to take part and no funds are exchanged in taking part in this initiative. We are provided with a venue to play in, sports equipment to play with and a free T-shirt with the National Lottery logo on it, and we are supervised by the umpires who are funded by the initiative.
I want to know, if by me attending (not paying for the activity) is deemed halal as the initiative is funded by a source deemed Haram
I would also like to know, if by participating as an umpire, which would be directly funded by the initiative, is also halal.
Answer
The national lottery is pure gambling and the impermissibility of gambling is clearly mentioned in Quraan and Hadith. The cricket tournament is funded by the national lottery as well as ______ Bank, both of which survive on impure funds in the form of interest or interest and gambling.
Based on the above, it will not be permissible for you to participate in such sporting tournaments.
