Question
A bonus/13th cheque is usually paid at the end of the year normally coinciding with the non-Muslim festive period.
Is it permissible to give a bonus/13th cheque to employees at the end of the year?
Is it permissible to use a bonus/13th cheque received at the end of the year?
Answer
The 13th cheque is either part of the contract or treated as a year-end bonus. In both scenarios, it is permissible to utilize the money paid out in the form of a 13th cheque, despite some people associating it with a christmas bonus.
In reality, no religious connotation features predominantly when observing the definition of the 13th cheque. When receiving the 13th cheque, an employee’s mind does not even fathom any link or bond with christmas. Instead, it has become a norm to treat it as a year-end bonus from the employer.
The bonus, which is generally given at the end of the year, is a Hibah (a gift) from the employer to the employee in acknowledgement of his/her hard work. Therefore, there will be nothing wrong in giving or receiving this amount.
