Question
After Shawwaal, which is the next best Islaamic month to perform Nikah?
Answer
With regard to getting married in Shawwaal, Maulana Shabbir Ahmad Uthmani R$ahimahullah has quoted in Fathul Mulhim that you can only say it is Mustahab to get married in Shawwaal, if it can be proven that Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam specifically got married in Shawwaal because of some specialty found in Shawwaal, a specialty that is not found in any other month. If Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam got married and it coincided with Shawwaal, then you cannot call it Mustahab, because to prove something Mustahab, you need a proof. Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam got married to his blessed wives Radiallahu An Hunn in different times which coincided with other months as well. Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam did not make an effort to get married on a specific time, date, or month. So if the mere occurrence of the marriage of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam in any month proved Istihbaab, then every month in which Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam got married would have been Mustahab to get married, whereas this is not the case.
The reason why Ayesha Radiallahu Anha used to like getting the girls married in Shawwaal, was to break the custom of the people of Jahiliyyah, they used to consider the month of Shawwaal to be a misfortune, so they would not get married in Shawwaal.
Mufti Mahmood Hasan Gangohi Rahimahullah has mentioned that to get married on any night, day, and date is permissible.
Mufti Saeed Ahmad Saheb Palanpuri Rahimahullah has mentioned that with regards to marriage, all days are equal, whenever a person wants to get married, he can get married. No specific month, day, or time has any virtue. Something which is a necessity, is general, and Shari’ah also doesn’t stipulate any time in it, so as to not create any difficulty; for e.g. air and water are necessities for man, man cannot live without it, that is why it is everywhere. Similarly, marriage is a necessity, therefor Shari’ah didn’t stipulate any time for marriage, a person can get married whenever he wants.
Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi Rahimahullah has written that we consider the marriage function as an occasion of happiness. So because of that, we tend to look in the calendar for an auspicious day. In this craze we don’t think whether what we are doing is permissible or not. We enquire from the astrologers which is the time of misfortune, so that the marriage does not take place on that time, whereas in actual fact the real time of misfortune is when a person commits a sin. Those who consider any date or month as a misfortune and do not get married on that date or month, their belief is contrary to Shari’ah.
Maulana Musa Kirmadi Rahimahullah has written that instead of enquiring which month or date is a misfortune, we should rather enquire from the women of the house when the girl would not be in menstruation, so that the marriage can take place on those days.
Shari’ah has also encouraged that once a girl has found a match, then marriage should not be delayed. Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam told Ali Radiallahu Anhu :
““O Ali, do not delay three things: when the time of Salaah has come in (then don’t delay in performing Salaah), when the Janazah is present (then don’t delay in performing the Janazah Salaah), and when you find a match for a girl (then don’t delay in getting her married).”
In conclusion: Shari’ah has not stipulated a time for getting married, once the match is found, marriage should take place immediately.
