Question
May one perform salaah on a lion’s skin?
Answer
The basic ruling with regards to animal skin is that, with the exception of pig-skin, the skin of all other animals is considered to be Taahir (pure) when it goes through the process of tanning, even if the animal is unlawful to consume (such as a lion), or the animal was not slaughtered according to the rules of Shariah. However, a pig is considered utterly filthy. Hence, its skin
remains Najis (impure) even after tanning.
Thus, one may perform Salah on lion skin provided it had undergone the process of tanning.
