Question
We have noticed that many people nowadays are reading Salaah with their shoes on.
Kindly send out the masaail of reading Salaah with their shoes on whether it be faraaidh or janaazah Salaah.
Answer
It is mentioned in a Hadeeth about Rasulullah ﷺ performing Salaah while wearing sandals. But in that era the roads were not dirty as they are now. In addition to that, the floor was full of pebbles in the Masdjid-e-Nabawi ﷺ. The reason mentioned in the Hadeeth for performing Salaah whilst wearing sandals in that era was to differentiate the Muslims from the Jews, in effect, to oppose the ways of the Jews; as they did not pray with their shoes on in that era. Rasulullah ﷺ had explicitly commanded us to oppose the ways of the Jews. When the Jews changed their habit and started praying with sandals and shoes on (as is the norm nowadays), then the way to oppose the ways of the Jews in this era will be to perform Salaah without shoes/sandals. Therefore, the Fuqaha state that it is Makrooh/undesirable to walk into the Masjid area (where Salaah is performed) with shoes/sandals on.
If someone does perform Salaah with sandals on then (even though it is undesirable and will be discouraged), the Salaah itself will be valid and will not have to be repeated; but with the proviso that the sandals are clean from dirt and filth (Najasah). From this we learn that if whilst performing Janazah Salaah, a person (in order to avoid his feet getting soiled on the sandy and muddy ground of the cemetery) removes his clean shoes/sandals and stands upon them, his Janazah Salaah will be valid.
