Question
When is it permissible to read the fajr qaza umri. Some sources say before Fajr, others claim you can read after the 2 Sunnah and 2 Dardh salaah.
Please give some clear guidance and what surahs can be read for the qaza umri.
Answer
Qadha-e-Umri
Qadha-e-Umri is a term which commonly refers to the Salaahs that a person missed in the past from the time that Salaah had become incumbent upon him (i.e. from the time that he/she attained puberty) . However, this term also has an alternative concept which is in vogue amongst many, thus resulting in confusion. Therefore, hereunder we will mention both concepts individually with their respective rulings.
When a person is certain, or he/she inclines towards certainty, that he/she has missed a specific number of Salaahs, then it will be incumbent upon this individual that he/she performs the Qadha of such Salaahs. One should apply one’s mind into reaching a sound conclusion regarding the figure of such Salaahs.
Thereafter, these Qadha Salaahs can be performed at any time excluding the following three times;
i. At the time of sunrise, until the time of Ishraq comes in,
ii. At the time of Istiwaa (Zenith), more commonly known as Zawaal, until the sun shifts from its zenith,
iii. And at the commencement of sunset, when the sun begins to show redness, until the sun has set.
Qadha Salaahs are not Nafl Salaahs, but Fardh therefore they may also be performed in the following three times, whereas these are time wherein all Nafl Salaahs are prohibited;
i. Between True Dawn (Subh Sadiq) and the Fajr Salaah (Note: the only non-Fardh Salaah that may be performed during this time are the two Sunnah of Fajr),
ii. From after the Fajr Salaah till sunrise,
iii. And from after the ‘Asr Salaah until sunset commences.
Therefore, in reply to your query, the Qadha-e-Umri may be performed before the Fajr Salaah, after the Fajr Salaah, until just before sunrise, as well as after the Asr Salaah, until the commencement of sunset. However, the Qadha should not be performed in public at these times, due to exposure of one’s sins and shortcomings.
There are no stipulations of any specific Surahs for such Qadha Salaahs. One may recite from wherever he/she would recite had the Salaah been performed in its stipulated time (Adaa).
