Question
A person accepts Islam. He is still living with his wife who is Christian. What is the Shar’ee ruling and solution for him?
Answer
If the husband accepts Islam whilst the wife remains a Christian (Ahle-Kitaab) then it is still permissible for the husband to continue his marriage with the wife. This is based on the fact that (even though it is strongly discouraged), it is fundamentally permissible for the husband to marry her in the first place (due to her being from the Ahle Kitaab).
However, he should continue striving to incline her towards Islam until she too accepts Islam. One of the ways of achieving this is by displaying good character towards her and serving her particularly now that the husband has accepted Islam. He has an opportunity of displaying the beautiful characteristics of Islam before her.
