Selling A Piano

Question

A Muslim brother had bought a piano when he was heedless of the Din. Now that he is learning the Din, he wants to get rid of it. Is he allowed to sell it and keep the money or does he have to donate the money to charity? Or, should he give it away without selling it?

Answer

He is not allowed to sell the piano. He may dismantle the piano and utilise the wood and useful materials in a permissible manner e.g. using it to make furniture. When it is no longer in the form of a piano, he may even sell the wood and other materials. If there are components of the piano which can only be used in a piano e.g. the keys of the piano etc., then he will not be allowed to sell these components. Yes he has the option of giving the piano back to the store where he bought it from and take his money back.
