Selling Ginger Powder To A Buyer Who Will Use it To Manufacture Alcohol

Ginger powder is such an item that has multiple purposes. It could be utilized in the manufacture of alcohol and could be used as an ingredient in other permissible food items as well. This means that the ginger powder itself is not a direct means of disobedience of Allah Ta’aala. 

Now, if the seller supplies ginger powder to an alcohol manufacturer having the sole intention that it will be used in the manufacture of alcohol, then the transaction will be prohibited, as this is (directly) assisting in the disobedience of Allah Ta’aala.

On the other hand, if he sells the powder to a client not knowing his objective, that is, it is not known whether the powder will be used in permissible or impermissible products, then the transaction will be in order and permitted in Shariah; and if it is known to the seller that the client may be utilizing the powder in the manufacture of alcohol then the transaction will be Makrooh (abhorred).
