Selling Items Which Were To Be Distributed Free Of Charge

Question

A person is given books for free to distribute to people over a few years.

Instead the brother takes the books and sells them.

He now realizes what he has done was wrong. He has made tawbah from such actions. How does he now correct this?

Answer

The brother was appointed as a Wakeel to distribute the books free of charge, hence it was incorrect for him to take money from people. He should try to locate the people from whom the money was taken and return their monies to them. If finding the owners is not possible, then these funds should be given out in charity.
