Shaving The Moustache

Question

I would like to enquire whether it is preferable for a man to shave his moustache or trim it?

Secondly will threading the moustache fall in the category of shaving it?

Answer

The Hadith states that one should lengthen the beard and shorten the moustache. The moustache should be shortened using a scissor or any such instrument or device that follows the same principle
as the scissor such as some of the current day electric  shavers. One should not shave the moustache utilizing a razor blade.

Threading the moustache refers to removal of the hair (from the root) using a cotton thread. Certain Fataawa Kitaabs state that any of the above mentioned ways are acceptable in Shariah.  However, some books of Ahadith and textual references of the jurists indicate that it is better to shorten the moustache in contrast to removing the hair from the very roots. We therefore do not approve of the threading method.
