Question
When a person buys a house with a swimming pool from a non muslim, does the swimming pool water need to be changed? As it wont/will be paak?
Answer
The water of a swimming pool may be categorized into either of two types:
1) Maa Katheer:
a) A non-circular shaped pool which has a surface area of 20.9m2 or more.
b) A circular shaped pool which has a diameter of 5.16 metres or more.
2) Maa Qaleel:
Any pool having dimensions less than those mentioned above.
With regard to Maa Katheer, if there is no perceptible change (via colour, taste or smell) in the water due to Najasah (impurity), the swimming pool will be considered Tahir (pure) and there will be no need to change the water.
With regard to Maa Qaleel, even the slightest presence of Najasah (impurity) in the water will render the water Najis (impure), whether the Najasah is perceived or not, necessitating that the water be changed.
