Taubah From Theft

Question

If money or any item was stolen from family member or fellow Muslim without them coming to know of it should one repay or how does one complete Taubah?

Answer

One will have to pay the money back and scholars have said: it is necessary to repent from every sin. If the offense involves the right of Allah Ta’aala and not a human, there are three conditions to be met in order that repentance be accepted by Allah Ta’aala:

1- To desist from committing the sin.

2- To feel remorse for committing it.

3- To resolve not to recommit it again.

Any repentance failing to meet any of these three conditions, would not be sincere. On the other hand if the sin involves a human’s right then it requires a fourth condition. To absolve oneself from such a right. If it is a property, he should return it to its rightful owner.
