Question
Please advise if the watering of plants/grass etc. is considered sadaqah?
Answer
The term Sadaqah in Islam is very vast. Any act of kindness done to any creation of Allah Ta’aala solely for the pleasure of AllahTa’aal is regarded as Sadaqah. Imaam Bukhaari in his Kitaab famously known as Saheeh Al Bukhari mentions a Hadith [2320] on the virtues of planting a tree or sowing crop.
Anas Bin Maalik Radiallahu Anhu reports that Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has said: “No Muslim plants a tree or sows a crop and then a bird or a man or an animal eats of it except it will be recorded as Sadaqah on his behalf.”
Keeping the above Hadith in mind one can deduce that if a person plants any plant or grass and looks after it with the intention of benefitting the creation of Allah Ta’aala then Insha-Allah such an action would be recorded as Sadaqah on his behalf. However, he should be careful that he does not waste water under the guise of watering plants especially in those areas where clean drinking water is scarce.
