The Words Of Tashahhud Being A Conversation At The Time Of Mi’raaj

Question

I have heard that Tashahhud was a conversation between Allah and Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) at the time of Miraaj.

Is this correct?

Answer

Our honorable Ustaadh Hadith Maulana Fadhlur-Rahman Azami Sahib (may Allah keep his blessings with us) writes in his book:

Did the Holy Prophet (Sallalahu Aleihi wa Sallam) read Tashahhud at the night of Mi’raaj?

This (following) story is very famous amongst the people and is also mentioned in the books of Tareekh (History), Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and Tafseer (Qur’aan commentary).

The Holy Prophet (may Allah’s salutations and peace be upon him), said: When I was uplifted to the heaven in the night of Mi’raaj, Jibreel (Aleihis-Salaam) commanded me to give Salaam to my Lord. I asked: “How should I give Salaam?” So Jibreel (Aleihis-Salaam) answered:- “Say: التحيات لله والصلوات والطيبات” So I said these words after which Jibreel (Aleihis-Salaam) said: “السلام عليك ايها النبي ورحمة الله وبركاته” so I said: “السلام علينا وعلى عباد الله الصالحين” Jibreel (Aleihis-Salaam) then said: “اشهد ان لا اله الا الله واشهد ان محمدا عبده ورسوله”

It is also narrated that the words “السلام عليك ايها النبي ورحمة الله وبركاته” was the answer given by Allah Ta’ala (at the night of Mi’raaj) to the  beloved Naby (Salallahu Aleihi Wa Sallam) when he read “التحيات لله والصلوات والطيبات”. The Blessed Prophet (Salallahu Aleihi Wa Sallam) desired to also include his Ummah in this virtue, so he read: “السلام علينا وعلى عباد الله الصالحين”. When the Angels heard this conversation they  became pleased and said: “اشهد ان لا اله الا الله واشهد ان محمدا عبده ورسوله

It seems as these two narrations do not confirm each other.

Allamah Kashmiry Rahimahullah says: “This Story is also narrated in Ar-Raudhul-Anf. I am not aware of its Sanad (Chain of Narration).”

It is written in Ad-Durrul-Mukhtaar (a famous and accepted book in the Hanafi Fiqh) that we should read these words “التحيات لله والصلوات والطيبات” “ in Tashahud as if we are saying them to Allah Ta’ala; and as if we are making Dua for peace for our Nabi (Salallahu Aleihi Wa Sallam), for ourselves and all the pious servants of Allah Ta’ala when reading the words: “. السلام عليك ايها النبي ورحمة الله و بركاته، السلام علينا وعلى عباد الله الصالحين

Here ends the passage quoted from the book of our honorable Ustaadh Hadhrat Maulana FadhlurRahman Azami Sahib (may Allah keep his blessings with us).
We have also searched in a number of books with regards to the Sanad of this oft-mentioned
incident but were also unsuccessful in finding a Sanad (chain of narration; through which this story
would become reliable, authentic and can be accepted to have really happened).
