Question
Is it a sunnah to throw dates in the air and at people after a nikkah?
Answer
The Fuqaha have permitted distributing (by allowing people to take dates from a tray or platter) and throwing of dates after Nikah. Both options are permitted. However, it is better to distribute the dates rather than throwing the dates in the Masjid, as the respect and honour of the Masjid is upheld to a greater extent by distributing.
We haven’t found any text proving that throwing of dates after Nikah is a Sunnah. In fact Imaam Baihaqi r states that the narrations which give concession for throwing dates after Nikah are classified as weak narrations. In conclusion, the concession of throwing dates after Nikah is found but it cannot be regarded as a Sunnah.
