Question
Since we are nearing the end of year, many Makaatib and Madrassahs award learners for achieving 1st , 2nd and 3rd positions with trophies
What is the status of these trophies in Sharia?
Also does this resemble the Kufaar in any way? Can it be classified as Tashabbuh?
Can trophies be given for any other achievement at year end Jalsas?
Lastly is there merit or basis in Sharia for awarding the top 3 achievers in Makaatib?
Answer
There is no harm in acknowledging and awarding learners who have excelled in their studies. In doing so, those receiving the award as well as those who have not, are encouraged to work harder in the ensuing years. During the battle of Hunayn, Nabee Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam encouraged the Sahaaabah Radiallahu Anhum in battle by awarding them with the goods of the enemy they killed:
“Whoever kills someone in battle, having a proof for that, then his goods are his.”
Trophies should not be given as prizes. Apart from them being of no use to the learner, it is akin to practice of the non-Muslims. A certificate along with a useful item such as a Kitaab would be a more appropriate prize.
