Question
Our government school in _______ ________ have adopted a new code of dress for school pupils. They have made the wearing of ties compulsory. My two sons who are in standard six were commanded accordingly to wear the tie as their daily dress. Until now my children never wore a tie at school or for any other occasion.
Kindly give a Shar’ee ruling regarding the wearing of the ties whether at school or otherwise.
Answer
Islaam prohibits a Muslim from donning a tie. The reason behind its prohibition is that the initial inception of the tie was to symbolise the christian crucifix, which explains the reason why the knot of the tie is fastened in the way of a cross.
Nowadays, although it is not strictly regarded any longer as a religious symbol of the christians, the stigma of its initial inception, innovation and religious heritage remains with it, albeit in a secondary degree. Muslims are commanded by their Rasool (Messenger), Muhammed H (peace be upon him) to avoid imitating the cultures of other nations and sects, especially in items of symbolic nature peculiar to a specific religion.
Hence, Muslims should abstain from donning the tie as part of their dressing.
