Wishing Happy Birthday

Question

It has become common practice for many (and more noticeably family members) to wish each other happy birthday, some also attach duas like may Allah grant you long life etc. to these birthday wishes.

Are either of these permissible?

Answer

Celebrating birthdays is a custom of the Kuffar, thus we as Muslims should refrain from such celebrations and wishes.

There is no harm in making Dua for another person that Allah Ta’aala grants him long life. However, the Dua for long life (so that one is able to carry out good deeds and thereby please Allah Ta’aala) should not be confined to one’s birthday rather be made at any time.
