Question
Is it permissible for women to shorten their hair?
Answer
Firstly, it should be understood that the beauty of a woman lies in the long hair which Allah Ta’ala has naturally created her with. For her to shorten the hair on the head will fall in the ambit of the verse wherein Allah Ta’ala speaks of the plots of Shaytaan that he will convince man to change the nature which Allah had created them with:
“(Shaytaan promises) ‘And indeed, I will order them to change the nature created by Allah’. And whoever takes Shaytaan as a Wali (protector or helper) instead of Allah, has surely suffered a manifest loss.” [Surah Nisaa’: 119]
Secondly, for a woman to shorten her hair is in full resemblance with men, whether she intends to do so or not. It is also in resemblance with the immoral women who have adopted the western style of life, and expose their bodies to one and all.
Nabi (Sallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) cursed those men who imitate women, and those women who imitate men.
Nabi (Sallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said: “Whoever imitates a nation will be (raised on the day of Qiyaamah) with them.”
If a woman trims her hair on the command of her husband, she will be sinful. The reason being, there is no obedience to the creation when it results in the disobedience of the Creator.
Therefore, under normal circumstances, it will not be permissible for a woman to trim or shorten her hair. If she does so, she will be sinful. If a woman had done so in the past, she should repent to Allah Ta’ala and seek His forgiveness.
