Question
What is the ruling regarding women applying perfume?
Answer
Women will be permitted to use perfumes in the case where they are with their husbands or Mahram. If they are travelling or amongst Non-Mahrams, they will not be permitted to utilize perfume. The following Hadeeth, mentions the type of perfume that women should utilize:
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “The perfume of man is in which the fragrance is apparent and the colour is slight, and the perfume of women is where the colour is apparent and the fragrance is slight.”
Here Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has described the perfume of women to have less scent and more colour. In the following Hadeeth of Tirmidhi, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has sent a caution to the women who apply perfume and wander around:
Rasulullah Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “Every eye (taking evil glances) is an adulterer. That woman who applies perfume and passes a gathering is like this and that ie. an adulterer.”
The reasoning behind this is that a strong scent has the power to attract and cause fitnah.A woman may apply strong perfume when in seclusion with her husband, as there will be no fear of fitnah in this case.
