Writing On The Hands And Arms

Question

I would like to know if it is permissible to write on the hands and arms with pens.

Answer

Nabi Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has declared the prohibition of tattooing by cursing both the tattoo
artist and the one tattooed, as is evident from the following hadith:

لعَنَ اللَّهُ الوَاصِلَةَ وَالْمُسْتَوْصِلَةَ، وَالْوَاشِمَةَ وَالْمُسْتَوْشِمَة

Tattooing the body is indeed a grave sin as it entails desecrating and changing the body which Allah Ta’ala has given to us as an Amaanah (trust). Tattooing is also one of the signs of the Fusaaq (open Transgressors). Although writing on one’s hands and arms does not fall under the direct prohibition of tattoos, it should not be done. By writing on our bodies we resemble those sinners that tattoo themselves. It is also a form of disrespect of the human body. Therefore, a person should not write on their hands or arms.
