Wudhu Not Being Nullified Due To A Sound In The Stomach Or Posterior

Question

I have a query regard sounds of the stomach  and anus growling. I have this problem for many years, does it break wudhu?

Answer

There is nothing to worry about since these growling sounds (that create doubts about one’s Wudhu) generally stem from Waswasah. Waswasah is just a whispering from Shaytaan and does not impact or affect anything in reality.

Once a Sahabi Radiallahu Anhu came to Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam and complained about Waswasah (whisperings) in his Salaah. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam advised him not to worry about it (i.e. not to go and perform a new Wudhu) until he hears the definite sound of wind being released from the posterior or smells the odour of a released wind (meaning that until he is not 100% sure that wind has been released).

In the light of this, we see that this problem existed from the time of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam. There is nothing to worry about until one is 100% sure that the wind has been released. This surety occurs generally (but not necessarily), by hearing the sound of the wind being released
or by perceiving its smell. So it is only when a person is absolutely sure that wind has been released, should he consider his Wudhu to be invalidated. By the mere growling or turning of the wind in the stomach or anus, one’s Wudhu will remain intact; and one should not pay any attention to this, as these are whisperings of Shaytaan.

Furthermore, there is a law in our Fiqh/jurisprudence: اليقين لا يزول بالشك (Certainty will not be nullified by doubts). Based on this law, if after making Wudhu, one has certainty that he is in a state of Wudhu and thereafter doubts occur about one’s Wudhu, such doubts should be ignored and disregarded, as long as one does not have full conviction and certitude that Wudhu has broken.
