Zakaat On A Loan With No Hope Of Repayment

Question

If someone owes me money but I am quite certain that I will not be paid back that money because I am not in contact with the person who owes me, or for whatever reason. Should I still add that amount to what I have when calculating zakaat?

Answer

There will be no Zakaat on that wealth loaned to someone which one has no hope of its return. If, however, one does receive the money, he will not have to give Zakaat for the previous years.
