Question
Will a loan amount given to others be subtracted during calculating the nisaab of qurbani & sadaqatul fitr?
As far I know, loan amount given to others will be added during calculating the nisab of zakat.
Recently I have found in a booklet that one has to receive the loan amount during the days of qurbani to add it with one’s wealth for calculating the nisab of qurbani.
Answer
The same ruling that applies to Zakaat applies to Qurbani as well in this particular Mas’ala; that is, the outstanding loan (due by the debtor) will not be subtracted rather it will be added to one’s cash or/and surplus assets as you have correctly understood, and if the total is then (independently or jointly) equivalent to the Zakaat Nisaab or more, then Qurbani is Waajib.
Yes, if a person does not possess any cash at all during the days of Qurbani, nor does he have any loan due to him by a debtor or even any excess goods over and above his basic needs (that adds up independently or jointly to the Zakaat Nisaab) which he may sell and make Qurbani, then Qurbani is not Waajib on him.
What you have read in the Kitaab is thus also correct and does not contradict what was mentioned earlier on above. So, if the person receives his loan amount during the days of Qurbaani, then too he will have to see whether it reaches the amount of Nisaab either separately or after adding it to his remaining wealth/surplus assets.
This in no way implies that he should not add the loaned amount to the cash or surplus assets in his possession if his loan hasn’t been settled as yet, thus the Mas’ala in the Kitaab is correct. The only advantage for him in the case where the loan is settled is that he won’t have to sell his surplus assets in order to procure funds for purchasing his Qurbani animal, because now cash is available (due to the loan being settled).
If he had not received the loaned amount during the days of Qurbani, then too, if the loaned amount independently or together with his remaining wealth/surplus assets adds up to the Zakaat Nisaab, he would still be obliged to make Qurbani, even if it means disposing of and selling his surplus assets in order to procure funds for purchasing the Qurbani animal.
