A Shafiee Musaafir Imaam Leading Hanafi Musaaafir Muqtadis

Question

If a Shafiee Imaam performs four Rakaats, what will be the condition of the Hanafi Muqtadis Salaah?

Answer

If the Shafi’ee Imaam leading the Salaah is a Muqeem and has a Hanafi Musaafir as his follower, then the Hanafi Muqtadi is simply required to follow the Shafi’ee Imaam throughout his Salaah and complete four Rakaats in full for Zuhr, Asr and Esha Salaah. The Hanafi Muqtadi’s Salaah (who is Musaafir) behind a Shafi’ee Imaam that is Muqeem is in order and valid.

On the other hand, if the Hanafi Muqtadi is a Muqeem whilst the Shafi’ee Imaam is also Muqeem then too the Hanafi’s Salaah behind the Shafi’ee Imaam is in order and valid.

If a Musaafir Shafi’ee Imaam leading Hanafi followers in Salaah that are Muqeem and the Shafi’ee Imaam (in spite of being a Musaafir) performs the full Salaah (i.e. 4 Rakaats in Zuhr, Asr and Esha), then the Salaah of the Hanafis will be invalid and they will be required to repeat their Salaah.

Hadrat Mufti Mahmood Saheb Gangohi Rahimahullah has written that if the Muqtadi is made aware that the Imaam’s Salaah is not valid according to the Muqtadi’s Madhab, then it is necessary for the Muqtadi to repeat his Salaah.
