Question
If I am to embark on a journey during Ramadhaan, will I have to fast on the day of travel?
Answer
If you are present in your home town at the time of dawn (Subh Saadiq) i.e. when the fast commences you are not a Musaafir, fasting on that day will be incumbent on you.
If at the time of (Subh Saadiq) you are a Musaafir (travelling the Shari’ distance of 78km or more) then fasting will not be incumbent on you on that day. However, if you are able to fast you should do so, as there is no greater fast than the fast of Ramadan.
The following Hadeeth narrated by Abu Huraira Radiallahu Anhu shows the greatness of a fast of Ramadan:
Abu Huraira Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam is reported to have said: “Whomsoever does not fast a day of Ramadan without a valid excuse or illness, he will not be able to compensate for that fast even if he was to fast his entire life.”
