Question
I wanted to know can I give clothing (in good condition or band new) cell phones that we are not using (good working condition) and other house hold items that we are not using in zakaat.
I do have cash so what would be better?
Also if we can give the items do we value it at a minimum price or the current value?
Answer
It will be permissible to give clothing, cell phones, and other household items in Zakaah, whether they are brand new or in good working condition.
The market value will be used on such items to determine their value. However, it should be borne in mind that one of the purposes of Zakaah is to
fulfill the need of the recipient and many a times a person doesn’t know what the recipient is in need of. Therefore, it would be advisable to give the recipient cash so that he/she may use it for his/her needs and as he/she pleases, but if one knows that so and so is in need of so and so item(s), it can be given to them.
Regardless, if one still opts to pay his/her Zakaah with items other than cash, his/her Zakaah will be fulfilled on condition that one gives the item(s) with the intention of Zakaah and Tamleek takes place, i.e. the recipient is made the owner of the item(s).

سوال:… ایک شخص ایک چیز چھ ماہ استعمال کرتا ہے، چھہ ماہ استعمال کے بعد وہی چیز اپنے دل میں زکوۃ کی نیت کر کے آدھی قیمت پر بغیر بتائے مستحق زکوۃ کو دے دیتا ہے، توزکوۃ ادا ہو جائے گی یا نہیں ؟
جواب … اگر بازار میں فروخت کی جائے اور اتنی قیمت مل جائے تو زکوۃ ادا ہو جائے گی۔
