Discharging Zakaat With Redundant Stock

Question

I would like to know if you can give redundant or obsolete stock as part of your Zakaat disbursement?

Answer

Yes, it is permissible to give such type of stock as part of Zakaat dispersment. The current market value of the redundant stock – i.e. what one can expect to get for the stock if sold on the market (even though it may, due to the redundancy of the stock be less than what one initially paid for it) – should be taken into consideration. Whatever that value is, one should consider its equivalent value to have been discharged as Zakaat when giving this stock to the poor.
