Dua To Safeguard The Tongue

Question

Is there a Dua I could read to safeguard my tongue from being involved in vain talks and Ghibat?

Also is there a Dua I could read to attain Taqwa in the heart?

Answer

1) The tongue is a a gift from Allah Ta’aala. It is only befitting of a slave of Allah Ta’aala that he/she uses his/her tongue in those things which are pleasing to Allah Ta’aala. For example, Zikr, Tilawat of Qur’aan, commanding good and forbidding evil etc.

One should not waste his/her time in useless and futile talk which many a times becomes the cause of one indulging in many types of sins, viz. backbiting, lying etc. which are Haraam. Rasoolullah Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam has mentioned in a Hadeeth:

“It is from the beauty of a person’s Islaam that he leaves out that which is useless which does not concern him.”

Below are Du’aas that one should recite for the protection of one’s tongue. However, one should remember that Du’aa is not sufficient to prevent one from speaking about useless and evil things, rather one should also try from his/her own part to refrain from these things. The Du’ās are as follows:

“O Allah Ta’aala, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, the evil of my sight, the evil of my tongue, the evil of my heart, and the evil of my [private part]”

“O my Lord, help me and do not help (others) against me; support me and do not support (others) against me; plan for me and do not plan against me; guide me and facilitate guidance for me, and support me against anyone who oppresses me. O Allah Ta’aala, make me always remember You, thank You, fear You, obey You, submit to You, invoke You humbly, and repent to You. O Allah , accept my repentance, wash my faults, answer my supplication, strengthen my case,
guide my heart, grant my tongue success and remove the darkness from my chest.”

2) Taqwa is a quality that a person should develop in which he/she has the fear of Allah Ta’aala and the awareness in his/her heart that Allah Taqwa is a quality that a person should develop in which he/she has the fear of Allah Ta’aala is always watching me. This will cause one to refrain from sins, including those of the tongue. The following Du’aas should be recited for attaining the Taqwa of Allah Ta’aala:

“O Allah Ta’aala, I ask you for guidance, righteousness, abstinence, and self-sufficiency”

“O Allah Ta’aala, grant my soul it’s piety and purify it, You are the best to purify it, You are it’s Guardian and Master”

“O Allah Ta’aala, make me such that I fear You as though I am always seeing You till I meet You, make me fortunate with your obedience and do not condemn me with Your disobedience.”
