Question
What is the fatwa regarding sitting on the floor and eating?
What is the fatwa regarding eating on the table and chairs?
Is it Tashabbuh or not?
Answer
Hadrat Maulana Yusuf Ludhyanwi Rahimahullah has written in ‘Aap Ke Masaa’il Unka Hal’ that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam would spread out the Dastarkhaan (cloth to eat upon) on the floor and then partake of meals. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam had never eaten on a table, this was the Sunnah of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam. To eat whilst seated on table and chairs is the way of the west. Muslims should not imitate the ways of the Jews and Christians.
Mulla Ali Qaari Rahimahullah states in Mirqaat that eating on the table is a symbol of the proud people generally. He further states that eating on the table is a Bid’at (innovation), but if a person does so, it will be fundamentally permissible.
