Meeting And Viewing A Girl With The Intention Of Marriage

Question

Allah willing I have made an intention to get married and I am going to see a girl soon. I would like to please ask mufti to guide me on the correct Islamic way of meeting the girl.

Specifically I would like to know how to go about meeting the girl at her home, and what are the rules which I must adhere to?

I would like to know the basic things as well as I have no idea about this matter for example when I go to the house, do I sit with the girl’s parents and speak to her or how exactly do I go about the whole thing.

Answer

It is not appropriate for a boy to openly request to see the girl even though he intends seeing her with the intention of marriage. If he gets an opportunity to glance at her in some way, there is no harm in doing so. This can be done by her passing a particular area when he can take a quick glance at her (with the intention of marriage), or alternately if she is invited to his home (or vice versa) for some reason and he happens to glance at her (from a room) without her knowledge (but with the intention of marriage), then too it is permissible.

If after seeing her you are interested in marrying the girl, you may seek guidance from Allah Ta’aala by performing Istikhaarah. By doing so, you will be guided towards a correct decision Insha’Allah.
