Stipulating The Month Of Ramadhaan To Discharge Zakaat

Question

What is the ruling with regard to stipulating the month of Ramadhaan to discharge Zakaat?

Answer

The stipulation of a specific date to fulfil one’s Zakaat is not necessary. Instead, Zakaat should be fulfilled immediately after one lunar year has passed from the time that the Nisaab amount comes into the possession of a person (Hawlaane-e-Hawl).

If Ramadhaan happens to occur prior to Hawlaane-e-Hawl, then there is no problem in distributing one’s Zakaat during Ramadhaan in advance with the hope of earning more reward. On the other hand, one should not delay just for the sake of fulfilling the Zakaat in Ramadhaan. Moreover, in addition to the many Muslims that are unmindful or ignorant of the obligation of Zakaat, some assume it to be connected and limited to Ramadhaan only. To dispel this false notion and avoid it developing into an innovation, it would be best to rather fulfil one’s Zakaat and encourage others to fulfil it on its due time.
