Zakaat Calculation Calendar

Question

Our annual Zakaat date is 28 Feb i.e. when we calculate our Zakaat due. By when should this liability be payable?

Answer

Zakaat should be calculated according to the lunar calendar and not the Gregorian calendar. Therefore, there should be a particular Islamic date every year on which Zakaat is calculated. If Zakaat is calculated according to the Gregorian calendar then one year’s Zakaat will be omitted every +-30 years.

The obligation and liability should be ideally discharged immediately as it becomes due. If needs be, Zakaat can be discharged in installments as well. However, it is best to discharge one’s Zakaat as quick as possible.
