Zakaat On An Estate

Is zakaat payable on an estate and by whom and the period? If the deceased estate has not yet been finalized, almost 5 years, and the deceased has money in the bank and dividends still coming in.

The heirs will only receive their inheritance once the lawyer has finalized everything and has been passed by the Master of the court.

An estate is not liable for Zakaat.

Therefore, no heir will pay any Zakaat on the money which is still in the bank until it is finalized. However, once the heirs are given the option of accessing their shares then they would include their respective amounts in their subsequent Zakaat calculations.
