Question
A person had 200 grams of gold in year 1436 Hijri and paid zakat of 5 grams (2.5% of 200=5) from his money, not actually from gold.
In the year 1437 Hijri must he pay zakat on 200 grams gold or on 195 grams. (He actually has 200 grams but he has paid off 5 grams from it in terms of money as Zakat in 1436).
Answer
In the year 1437 Hijri the person will have to give Zakat on 200 grams of gold and not on 195 grams.
This is because of the fact that in terms of Shari’ah, when the gold in one’s possession reaches Nisaab (the amount specified by Shariah which if a person owns will make Zakat Fardh upon him) and a year passes on it, then Zakat will be Fardh. So in this case due to the fact that the Zakat in the year 1436 was given in money and not in actual gold, the full 200 grams of gold remained in his possession when the cycle of the following year (1437) ended; thus he’ll have to give Zakat on that full amount of 200 grams and not on only 195 grams.
